Google Maps Does it again!

Raises the bar I mean - this is pretty cool (even if you're not really a techie), but when you get directions on Google Maps now, if you don't like the route, or decide you need to stop off somewhere first, you can just grap a point and move it in pretty much real time - the route will recalculate everything and serve you up your new directions/distance/drink of choice.

When it comes to map stuff, it takes a lot to get me excited, coz I tend to deal with it pretty much every day in some form or another. Today, I'm excited. Go try it yourself...

Aussies Singing? I hope not.....

The fact that I briefly appeared in this video was a surprise to me, as I had no recollection of this song, or the video camera presence. I still haven't decided if the camera work or the singing was worth, but needless to say, they were both very very bad. One more stag/bachelor party to go, and then it's over for the foreseeable future. My liver will be happy.....

Everything's Breaking

So my Xbox360 gave up the ghost on Saturday (and I haven't even spent much time playing Forza2 yet), and I just got an email from Xbox support saying it's likely a hardware failure, so it's going to have to be shipped off to their factory or something. Not good, but survivable.

Today, the new toilet decided to spurt water into the downstairs closet - not good, especially as I'm not there. The plumber (also known as mother-in-law) is heading over as we speak to cap it off and stop the flooding. I think we're going to have to break from the company known as Kohler and get something that doesn't look as good, but actually can be installed without leaks.

And later is my presentation at the ESRI User Conference - I really hope this isn't a sign that that will break as well.... Fingers crossed.

Searching the Lijit Way

I mentioned Lijit a while ago, when I first added the widget over on the left. It seems like people actually use it as well, which is a bit of a bonus ;-)

I've actually used it quite a bit, either to search for stuff I know I posted about but can't remember where it was, and also for this stats page (which I've made public so you can all take a look if you're so inclined). The great thing about this is that I get an idea of how many people are actually looking for specific things, and how people end up at my site.

Recent winners seem to be the Kohler Rain Tile (highly recommended, I promise I'll try and take the pick today...), and our good friend Jonny Decker, from this previous post. And also, for whoever was looking to see when Heidi's birthday is - July 25th, and yes, we're going to attempt the usual big bash (the weekend before, as a certain Mr Tonkin has something going in Vegas the weekend after...).

So, if you haven't tried it out, you might be pleasantly surprised...

Neil and Lauren Get Married

The Wedding Party
Originally uploaded by Aaron in Denver.
Well, it was as expected - a perfect day. It seemed like everyone had a blast (and I know we did), and some of the dancing towards the end of the night bordered on the spectacular.

I made a point of trying to take plenty photos during the day, only to realize that I hadn't managed very many of Neil and Lauren together when I came to upload them.

Anyway, the rest of the pics are here (and if other people have any, let me know so I can add in the links). Now I just have to work out how to get rid of my hangover (but it's not as bad as Thompsons ;-)

Not that he has to, but I would think a resident of down south and NYC, depending on which week it is, would ask which bars he needed to visit (or avoid) if he was up there. Unless of course, he was just going to take cool pics of the bridge?

Ranking the Largest Airports

Given the amount of time I spend in some of these airports, I feel I'm qualified to comment. And the fact that Denver fares worse than Atlanta is complete and utter crap. I've flown back and forwards between these two airports probably twice a month for the last 3 years, and been delayed coming out of Atlanta at least 3 times as many times as the Denver delays. The only thing better is the smoking lounge right next to the United gate.....

Beer and Movies

I'm a bit of a movie freak (600 dvd's and counting...), but I never go out to see them (hence all the dvd's). There's something about having to drag yourself out of the house to try and watch a movie with no beer, and lots of teenagers txt'ing, throwing popcorn and answering their phone all the way through. Every couple of years, we break down, try it again, experience the same thing, and wait another 2 years to see if it's any different.

But, now there's a new theatre coming to Denver that serves reall food instead of the usual prefabricated popcorn and nachos, as well as beer, wine and proper drinks! It could be worth a visit....

Paris Back in Jail

She's obviously not happy about it (and apparently got 'dragged' out of court by the marshall while crying for her mommy).

For some reason, the fact that she's going back makes me kinda happy. I'm not really sure why - maybe it's just the concept that despite being ridiculously rich, she still has to pay her dues for screwing up. Only fair if you ask me.

Of course, the chances of her seeing out the rest of her 45 days (or 23 if she's good) are still slim, but there's hope. Next time she gets out though, it'll have to be a big secret, otherwise we'll be doing all this again....

Random iPhone Request

I'm a big fan of Last.fm, even before it got bought for billiosn of dollars (well, a lot anyway). It's good for the tech industry in the UK to show that they can live with the Silicon Valley boys, and hopefully will need to more of the same coming from England.

Anyway, the only thing that gives me a hard time about the app is that I'm currently running low on disk space on my work computer (I'm holding out for a little while until the "can we move to Mac's question is answered before I put in my request for a new one"), so I'm pretty low on music on that. Which means I carry around my super duper 8gig nano, and listen to that in the office when I'm not on the necessary evil of back to back conference calls. All my iPods (all 2 of them ;-) synch up to the Mac at home, which means they don't connect to my PC for running through iTunes on the laptop. And here is my problem, my Last.fm account doesn't update. I have a scrobbler at home that picks up what I played on my iPod when I redock it, and ships it up to the site then, but given the battery life on the new iPod compared to my 4 or 5 year old one I was previously using, I don't really need to dock it much.

So, this means my current (and only from what I can remember) request for functionality for the new iPhone is to have the ability to use Last.fm, automatically send up the tracks played. There, not hard (or it shouldn't be anyway). It would make me happy (which is obviously an easy thing).

Trigger Point Needle Therapy

So last night was my first session of voluntarily getting needles stuck in my back and wiggled around, in the hope it would help. I'm still in shock I volunteered for this stuff - previous needle experiences haven't exactly filled me with joy (the whole open face wound from the BMX'ing incident when I was 15 still gives me the shivers when I think about it).

Anyway, a quick rundown on the technicalities of it. I first thought it was more along the lines of accupuncture, where they just stick those tiny needles in and leave you to meditate for a bit, until I read up a bit more on it. They actually use slightly thicker needles (which I deliberately didn't look at - old habits die hard), and then once they're in there, they wiggle them around until they hit the center of your muscle, and it involutarily cramps up. The idea behind it is (and I'm not a doctor, so this could all be complete crap, but I'll take a shot anyway) that your muscle gets worked so hard, that it has no other choice at the end of the procedure but to be completely relaxed. The body then sends blood and whatever else it needs in huge doses to the affected area, speeding up healing, and allowing the muscle to realize what it's natural state is supposed to me (only tightening when you really want to use it), rather than just tense all the time to try and protect the bits in your back that hurt.

So, what did I think. Good question - the needles themselves didn't hurt - I only felt one of them going in a bit, the rest we pretty painless. But then the wiggling starts..... It was pretty weird to start off with - nothing much going on, and then all of a sudden (if it's working properly and the doc hits the right spot) you get the most intense feeling of cramp ever. What's weird about it is that it's not like regular cramp, which typically takes up the whole muscle (like your thigh, or calf or something) - it's really localized, like the size of a quarter (or 10 pence piece for back home). One muscle somehow managed to send a shooting pain all the way down the back of my leg though, as the whole think locked up, which resulted in the needle inserter saying "good job!". I thought it was because I had somehow managed to keep the large amounts of profanity that was flying through my brain from entering the world, but apparently the more your muscles react, the better it is.

Anyway, this went on for about 20 minutes, and it was pretty survivable. Once I was done, I had to ride the bike for about 10 mins, just to make sure the muscles stayed loose, and didn't lock straight back up, and then do a bit of light exercise that night (walking Fynn was enough). I was a little sore last night (and no anti inflammatories allowed), and today it just feels like I had a decent workout. I'm still trying to work out why I feel so good today - it's either the effects of this, it's Friday, or Fynn managed to stay asleep the whole night so we got a decent nights kip. Anyway, it's probably a combination of all three, but apart fromt he soreness, the back feels better than it has in a long long time. Here's hoping it only gets better from here...

I'm always wrong

Well, not always, but if you look a little further down the page, I boldly predicted everyone was coming back to Greys for next season. Of course, no sooner than I did that, but ABC released official confirmation that they weren't brining back Dr Burke.....

Maybe I need a new approach to this blogging thing - just hold off on all posts until the final days of my life, just to make sure I'm right (at least while I'm alive). There are a few technical challenges to this, and I'm hoping that I've got a few years left in me (at least), so blogging as it is today will no longer exist. By that time, we're probably all living inside a computerized world, wired up to lots of sensors, and physically just in the house (or data center). Anyway, complete sidetrack over. Back to trying to just get things right first time I guess....

Who should eat all the pies

Apparently, Victoria won the UK Glamour Magazine woman of the year this week, but in complete contrast to our favorite fat guy (newly crowned favorite of course), Mr Viduka, I would strongly suggest she ate a lot more pies.

Maybe the moving to the US effect will hit her soon - I think I managed to put on about 30 or so pounds since I got off the plane - how can you resist a diet of Chipolte, and those extra sized portions. If not, it might be worth a drive across to force a couple of FatBurgers down her throat (and give her a haircut while we're at it). Volunteers please step forward

Everyone's coming back to Grey's Anatomy

Alledgedly, according to E! Online, via TV Squad. I'm not 100% convinced - I kinda got the impression they could start off with almost a whole new cast at the end of the last series, but maybe I'm just in a "everyone's going to die or leave" kinda mood with the end of The Sopranos almost upon us.

It's a Sad Day...

I'm not sure when it happened (maybe starting to code when I was 9 had something to do with it), but today I realized I actually was still a sad techie at heart (and thereby proving my wife's ascertations). Anyway, I realized this because I just read a page on a new file system, and smiled the whole way through. How sad is that?

Anyway, due to one of the Sun guys releasing a little info early about what OS X Leopard is using for it's file system, I ended up on the page below. If you're as sad as I am, you can check it out, otherwise I would suggest moving on swiftly.

25 Pints and Driving - It Just Doesn't Mix

Somehow, I find the story of having 20 to 25 pints of lager in one night slightly unbelievable. I've been a few benders in my time, but I don't think I've ever managed to fit that much in. Anyway, this guy was obviously wasted, coz he told the police that when they were trying (unsuccessfully) to breathalize him. How he even managed to get in his car and start it remains a mystery, but I suppose the one saving grace was that he did pull off the road before the police even got there....

MacBook Pro Updated

They're oh so pretty. And now even faster (who thought Apple moving to the Intel platform was a bad idea?).

So, performance boosts, more memory, bigger hard-drives, faster graphics card and slimmer and lighter to boot. Now if only I could work out how to afford one of these things (and justify it in my head that it's worth it, despite having a work laptop and an iMac in the house).

Techie details are here if you're interested in that sort of thing.

Weekly Round Up

Well, six million things going on this week, which meant only a few posts of variable quality all week (although who can really complain about the car videos - they were great ;-)

Anyway, some of the things going on which made posting tough
  • We have another family member - Jack Ryan Woodson entered the world on Wednesday evening (8lb 10oz). We got to see him on Saturday, but I somehow managed to forget the camera, so you're going to have to wait for pics.
  • Fynn has decided her morning routine involves getting up every morning between 5 and 5.30 am, and I volunteered for morning duty (unfortunately, she hasn't recognized that weekends are for lie-in's either, but at least I can take turns with the wife for snoozes during the day to try to keep sane)
  • Work (of course) - suddenly got back to start up levels of busyness by taking over another project with a real client, and also all the R&D stuff we're doing, while my original project hasn't finished yet. But, despite the blind panic and realization of all the work that needs to get done in the next few months, I was back to smiling every day. All good.
  • Back - still doing the scary physical torture stuff twice a week to get over the bath carrying incident (or stupidity as my physical therapist calls it). She decided I'd had the nice gentle warm up appointments, and got to the real work this week. No tears, but there were a few choice words as she tried to stretch me out in directions I hadn't been stretched for a few years. Next week is when the real scary stuff starts though - trigger point deep needle therapy (I did make a realization that anytime anyone in the health industry uses the word therapy, it's their nice way of saying it's going to hurt). So, never had it before, but I did do a little reading to make sure the people suggesting it weren't just trying to cause me undue pain and duress - I'm obviously hoping for miracle like results, as needles have never been my favorite pasttime.
OK - excuses over, althought I'm not sure it'll be any different for the next few weeks. I will try and make sure I check off at least a few things from the list though, so stay tuned....

Looks like this was just announced, although there had been a few rumours floating around, but Google went out and purchased Feedburner. The official announcement is here, and their VC view of the deal is here.

I use both Google (who doesn't these days) and Feedburner, not that it makes much difference, but I guess all my blog underlying technology is now on the same platform (written in Blogger, feed by FeedBurner - the little orange badge thing over on the left, and compulsive blog reading courtesy of Reader). Denver gets a rugby stadium?

Not exactly the most popular sport over here (although Aspen does have a tournament every summer), but it seems following last years big footie stadium we got built, we're in a bit of real sport stadium building. Before you know it, we'll have a big cricket pitch in the middle of Coors Field....
